EXCLUSIVE: Sierra/Affinity has picked up the worldwide rights to Sovereign, a sci-fi thriller written by Geoff Tock & Gregory Weidman. Marc Munden will direct with 21 Laps’ Shawn Levy, Dan Levine and Dan Cohen producing. Nick Meyer and Mark Schaberg will executive produce along with Kelly McCormick who is overseeing the project with Josie Liang for Sierra/Affinity. WME Global will broker the domestic deal.
A mixture between cerebral sci-fi films such as 2001 and Solaris with more gritty genre fare like Death Wish and Taken, the story follows a husband in a broken marriage whose wife has gone missing amidst her cosmonaut work aboard a spaceship. He goes into space looking for answers and discovers something more terrifying than he ever could’ve imagined. Munden is the prolific BAFTA-winning director who is coming off the hit British series Utopia. Weidman & Tock also come from television where they have written on SyFy’s Defiance and CBS’s Limitless. Sierra/Affinity recently wrapped production on David Leitch’s cold war thriller The Coldest City starring Charlize Theron and James McAvoy. The sales division recently sold the world on Kenneth Lonergan’s Sundance darling Manchester By The Sea, including a $10M domestic sale to Amazon Studios, and also notably sold the Ethan Hawke thriller 24 Hours To Live at Berlin.
21 Laps is wrapping their Netflix supernatural drama series Stranger Things and also in production on their Fox John Hamburg comedy Why Him? Their Paramount sci-fi thriller Story Of Your Life, New Line comedy Fist Fight and Fox Searchlight comedy Table 19 are all in post-production. WME reps Levy, Weidman & Tock and Munden, who is also repped by Independent Talent Group in the UK. Grandview manages Weidman & Tock.
