EXCLUSIVE: Robert Halmi Jr.’s Great Point Media has come on board to finance development and production for Solo Pass, Ronald De Feo’s novel, optioned last May for Steve Buscemi to direct and The Gotham Group and Olive Productions to produce. In addition, Stu Zicherman (The Americans) has been hired to adapt the book for big screen.
Published by Other Press in 2013, Solo Pass follows the story of a psychiatric patient confined to the psychiatric ward of a city hospital after suffering a breakdown. Finally granted a one day “solo pass” to leave the facility and venture into the world, he begins to confront the experiences and fears that led him to his breakdown.
This dark comedy will be produced by Gotham’s Ellen Goldsmith-Vein and Lee Stollman along with Olive’s principals Wren Arthur, Steve Buscemi and Stanley Tucci. There is no lead yet, but Buscemi may play a supporting role in the film.
Great Point Media was founded in 2012 by Robert Halmi Jr. and Jim Reeve; they will serve as executive producers on Solo Pass. Halmi is an Emmy Award and Golden Globe Award-winning film and television producer with over 300 production credits, including Tin Man, Farscape, and Lonesome Dove (based on author Larry McMurty’s masterpiece). Reeve is an Emmy Award-winning producer with 25 years’ experience in the development, production, financing and distribution of television programs and films. His credits include Foyle’s War and Jack Higgins’ On Dangerous Ground.
Zicherman, who is best known as creator of ABC series Six Degrees, and was most recently co-exec producer of The Americans, created the upcoming Showtime pilot Mating. He will executive produce along with Jason Katims and Michelle Lee. He made his feature debut as writer/director with his dark comedy A.C.O.D, which starred Amy Poehler and Adam Scott.
Buscemi, currently starring opposite Louis CK in his original series Horace and Pete, is an Emmy-award nominated director, having worked in both comedy and drama including, The Sopranos, Portlandia, 30 Rock, Oz and Nurse Jackie. He made his directorial debut with Tree’s Lounge and followed that with the remake of Theo Van Gogh’s Interview, in which he starred opposite Sienna Miller. He most recently directed episodes of Judd Apatow’s new Netflix series Love as well as Portlandia (both of which will be airing this year).
The Gotham Group is currently in pre-production on the third installment of the Maze Runner series with The Maze Runner: The Death Cure which starts shooting next month in Vancouver for Fox. The last two installments of the feature films grossed $660.6M worldwide. They are in post-production on Stephanie, directed by Akiva Goldsman and which stars Frank Grillo, Anna Torv and Shree Crooks.
Olive has just completed production on Blue Angel, directed by Richard Levine and starring Stanley Tucci and Kyra Sedgwick. They are also in post on Amber Tamblyn’s directorial debut, Paint it Black, which is an adaptation of Janet Fitch’s novel. They also just completed the documentary Check It, directed by Dana Flor and Toby Oppenheimer
DeFeo, the author of Solo Pass is a writer, editor and literary critic. He has written reviews for The New York Times Book Review, The Nation, and The New Republic, to name a few. He is also the author of the novels Calling Mr. King and the e-book House of Monsters, based on the Fred and Rose West serial murder case.
