Emmy-winning director Greg Yaitanes will direct and executive produce Spike’s scripted drama Red Mars. It was announced today by Sharon Levy, Executive Vice President, Original Series at Spike TV and Marcy Ross, President of Skydance Television.

The 10-episode series, based on Kim Stanley Robinson’s award-winning Mars Trilogy books Red Mars, Green Mars and Blue Mars, chronicles mankind’s colonization and transformation of the Red Planet. The books have been adapted in 21 languages and are regarded as the best novels ever written on the subject. Red Mars goes into production this summer for a 2017 debut. Skydance Television is the studio.

Yaitanes’ extensive résumé includes such series as Lost, Damages, Grey’s Anatomy, Ray Donovan, Heroes, Banshee and House, for which he earned an Emmy in 2008. He is repped by Joe Cohen and Tiffany Ward at CAA.

Peter Noah serves as executive producer on Red Mars along with Skydance’s Ellison, Dana Goldberg, Marcy Ross and Brett Conrad. J. Michael Straczynski is executive producer along with Vince Gerardis.

Levy, Ted Gold, Justin Lacob and Lauren Ruggiero will oversee the project for Spike. Vlad Wolynetz will serve as co-executive producer. Spike TV debuted its first scripted event series in eight years, Tut, in July to strong ratings.
