“If you listen to the loudest voices out there today, you’d think we’re a country that hates Mexicans, hates Muslims and thinks that committing war crimes is the best way to make America great again,” George Clooney wrote today in a letter supporting Hillary Clinton and the April 16 event he is hosting for her at his and wife Amal’s Los Angeles home. “The truth is that the only thing that would prevent America from being great would be to empower these voices,” he adds in the campaign pitch. While never naming Donald Trump, by the rhetoric he is quoting, the Oscar winner clearly has the GOP front-runner in his sights in the correspondence that went out Monday morning.
“In all of this clutter, there’s been one consistent voice — a voice of tolerance and experience from a candidate who’s spent a lifetime fighting for the rights of the less fortunate,” Clooney says of Clinton, the “only grown-up in the room” and the leading Democratic contender for the presidential nomination. “A candidate who knows firsthand the complexity of our international relationships. That candidate is Hillary Clinton.”
Clinton is looking for some serious cash as the former Secretary of State seeks to fight off Dem rival Bernie Sanders and solidify her delegate lead to the nomination. Tickets for the swank and intimate fundraiser next month are going for $33,400 each at the top end. While this likely won’t be a record-breaking repeat of the $15 million a previous Clonney hosted fundraiser scored for President Barack Obama in 2012 when the incumbent was running for re-election, the upcoming shindig co-hosted by Jeffrey and Marilyn Katzenberg, Steven Spielberg and Kate Capshaw, and Haim and Cheryl Saban is expected to be one of Clinton’s biggest hauls of the primary season.
As part of the April 16 event, Clinton supporters can enter a contest to hang with Clooney, the candidate and gang. No donation is required, though the campaign is looking for $10 offers in the letter that went out Monday.
Before then, the ex-First Lady is back in town Thursday for a trio of Tinseltown cash grabs as well as an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live!
BTW, if you have any doubt about Clooney’s stance on Trump, remember the Hail, Caesar! actor called the ex-Apprentice host a “xenophobic fascist” in a UK interview this month.
