Freeform has put in development Sleeping Beauty-themed hourlong scripted drama After (working title), based on Rhiannon Thomas’ 2015 debut novel A Wicked Thing, from veteran youth programming writer-producer Tom Lynch.
After re-imagines Sleeping Beauty and what happens after happily ever. In it, Princess Aurora wakes up to the kiss of a handsome prince one hundred years after falling asleep to find her family long dead and her kingdom taken from her. She must transform into a warrior to regain it. Lynch is co-writing with Adam Lash and Cori Uchida (Eye Candy), and executive producing with Robin Schwartz for the the Tom Lynch Co. and Brillstein Entertainment Partners.
Lynch was the top creator and producer of scripted series targeting tweens in the 1990s and 2000s. He was behind such shows as Nick’s The Secret World of Alex Mack, Caitlin’s Way, and South of Nowhere. Lynch recently wrapped production on Nickelodeon’s musical comedy series Make It Pop. He is repped by Gersh and Morris YornBarnes.
Lash and Uchida have worked on NBC’s Heroes: Reborn, MTV’s Eye Candy and Syfy’s Helix. They are repped by Verve, Mad House Entertainment and Hansen Jacobsen Teller. Thomas is repped by Nelson Literary Agency and UTA. A Wicked Thing was published by HarperCollins Children’s division.
A Wicked Thing marks the latest revisionist take on Sleeping Beauty. It follows the 2014 Disney movie Maleficent starring Angelina Jolie as the iconic villain.
On the fairytale front, Freeform recently acquired A Cinderella Story: If the Show Fits, the latest installment in Warner Bros’ Cinderella Story series. Cinderella and Sleeping Beauty both are properties closely associated with Freeform parent Disney.
