Two years into her tenure as EVP of Development for Universal Cable Prods., Dawn Olmstead is expanding her portfolio. In her new role as EVP of Development at Universal Cable Prods. and Wilshire Studios, Olmstead — who has renewed her contract — will add oversight of development for Wilshire Studios, NBCUniversal Cable Entertainment’s unscripted production unit, while continuing to oversee scripted development for UCP. Olmstead will continue to report to Jeff Wachtel, Chief Content Officer, NBCUniversal Cable Entertainment and President, UCP and Wilshire Studios. The top development job at Wilshire Studios had been vacant since last summer; it was previously held by Gary Auerbach.
“Dawn is, quite simply, one of the best in the business,” said Wachtel. “She’s been instrumental in elevating UCP’s profile and making it a ‘go-to’ studio for prominent industry players as well as up-and-coming talent.”
Since joining UCP in January 2014, Olmstead has shepherded the development of such series as the Golden Globe-winning Mr. Robot for USA, The Magicians for SyFy, and Colony, for USA, a co-production between UCP and Legendary Television. The genres UCP has expanded into under Olmstead include true fiction (The Von Bulow Affair), comedy (Hulu’s Difficult People), comic book (El Pantera) and science fiction (Syfy’s Hunters).
