“If no one was going to stand up for us, we stood up for ourselves.” That line is from the documentary film Check It, which will have its world premiere at the upcoming Tribeca Film Festival. The pic follows the exploits of seemingly unlikely gang bangers: An LGBT African American gang of the same name — once victims of violent crimes — who turn the tables and fight back. Struggling to survive in Washington D.C. , the gang embarks on a journey to transition from a life of violence to one in the fashion industry. The documentary is directed and produced by Dana Flor and Toby Oppenheimer, with Stanley Tucci and Steve Buscemi serving as executive producer and Wren Arthur as producer.
Check It explores the undying friendship that exists between these kids – an unbreakable bond that is tested every day as they fight to stand up for who they are in a community trying to beat them down. WME is repping sales rights at the fest.
