Razzies: 'Fantastic Four' & 'Fifty Shades of Grey' Dominate As Stallone Wins The Redeemer Award

It’s official: Fantastic Four and Fifty Shades of Grey are the worst movies of 2015. At least according to the 36th Annual Razzie Awards, where the two films positively cleaned up. Tied for Worst Picture, the pics took home a combined seven Razzies, with Fifty Shades nabbing Worst Screen Combo and both Worst Actress and Worst Actor, and Fantastic Four director Josh Trank taking home the prize for Worst Director.

the-thing-fantastic-four-3Fantastic Four‘s 3 ‘wins’ total is yet another black mark on Fox’s attempt to reboot the Marvel franchise. Overshadowed in the months before release by (mostly unconfirmed) stories of turmoil behind the scenes, the strangely grim take on one of Marvel’s sunniest properties flopped hard, earning a relatively paltry $168 million on a budget of $120 million. Unsurprisingly, Fox removed a planned sequel to the film from its schedule back in November, but tonight’s win might as well be the final nail in that sequel’s coffin. But at least it didn’t have as bad a showing as Fifty Shades, which took home 5 Razzies total. Shades will of course be crying all the way to the bank however: the bondage romance based on Twilight Fanfic made $571 million last year, and Universal Pictures has been shouting “haters gonna hate” ever since.

But it wasn’t all bad news, as Sylvester Stallone, the all time Razzie champ, was awarded the second annual Razzie Redeemer Award. Introduced last year, the prize acknowledges past Razzie winners who’ve gone on to do better work, decided by a public vote of Rotten Tomatoes users. His win comes thanks to his Academy Award-nominated turn in Ryan Coogler’s Rocky spinoff Creed, which was universally praised (but, aside from Sly, completely ignored by the Academy). One wonders if he’ll mention this tomorrow, if, that is, he wins that Oscar. Or at least, I wonder.

Announced tonight at 8 PM at the Palace Theater in Los Angeles, as usual on the eve of the Academy Awards, the Razzies are a preemptive middle finger to what Razzie Awards founder John Wilson called “Tinsel Town’s annual glut of self congratulatory awards.” Here’s the complete list of Winners and Nominees:

    1. Sisters doesn’t count against her because it was released before last New Year’s Eve, and was actually decent. Also, you seem to forget Tina Fey is not exactly an empty shell that just happens to be well decorated.

  1. Kelly Marcel (Saving Mr. Banks) had very little to do with the finished product of a script. I put that on the director. Unfortunately, it’s Ms. Marcel who will be saddled with the anti-fame that comes with “winning” a Razzie.

    1. True, but it’s hard for me to imagine that her original script of that movie was a gem marred by studio interference.

  2. Fifty Shades is a lame movie, but Fantastic Four is way way worse, the result, the expectations, the people involved, the promise, the hope, the director, everything it had going for it only to flop so hard thanks to it being so unbelievably bad, it should’ve won alone, it didn’t “deserve” to tie for Worst Picture, it was definitely THE worst picture of the year. I understand the urge and need to feel like Fifty Shades was worse, to give it the token award it probably “won” when the project was announced, but it wasn’t necessary, there was a worst picture out there. And Dakota Johnson was actually well reviewed in this role, so another unnecessary win, she was the most visible and remembered of the nominees, but still.

  3. See chronicle? Trank is a hell of a director. I personally have no dog in this fight, I have zero connection to trank or fantastic four, but I honestly think that the film was ruined by studio forcing editing of act two. Had Act II been more complete I think we would’ve had an extremely interesting, dark, new take on fantastic four. It’s a shame.

  4. Well a lot of this stuff is spot on. Not all of it though. Stallone is the King of Razzies. Redemption my heiny.

And although Jamie may have been off (not sure) It is Michael B Jordan who Tranked really badly in the acting department.

Michael B Jordan is the worst actor of the year, bar none.

  5. I think all the fifty shades of gray awards are well-earned EXCEPT worst actress. I’m sorry, but Dakota johnson’s acting was the only good thing in that trainwreck. I can think of very bad performances this year: Katherine Heigl, Cara Delavigne, Kristen Stewart, Mila Kunis, even Jennifer Lawrence in her horrible performance of Mystique. The razzies are just trying to use the most famous title to create buzz, but Dakota Johnson’s acting was good. At least in that movie.

  6. The failure of 2015 Fantastic Four is 1 part FOX & 2 parts Tranks. They overvalued Chronicle. A 3x is not great & foreign fell short of domestic. The earlier films had a lukewarm BO response because fans hated Alba as Sue & Victor’s char in general. Tranks choices were 100x worse. Fans generally liked the fun feel of the earlier films, & Tranks was thinking sci-fi/ horror. They didn’t like anything he was doing with FF.
Vaughn proved himself again. He picked up this train wreck with just 5 months before release date, & got it done. That’s why there’s a time jump in the middle. With about $30M from video sales, FOX gets a write off for about $50M & retention of FF rights for another 7 years. Not a bad rescue job considering.
As for FF’s future, Vaughn’s slate is too filled. Expect Tim Miller (Deadpool) to pick it up. Fans will no doubt be pleased with that decision. They may finally get a Sue, Johnny, & Victor that look, sound and feel like they are descendants of Eastern European parents.

  7. I thought “50 Shades” was beautiful and sexy. An attractive, ready for love woman meets a handsome, troubled man. He’s stiff in the movie because he is a victim of a horrible upbringing (not from bad acting) and lacks some social skills. And they fall in love, a first for both of them. Lots of people saw the movie and bought the books so it did appeal to many.
