John Oliver’s Last Week Tonight debuted its third season on HBO last nightand, as he’d promised recently when he visited Seth Meyers on NBC, finally dove into the presidential election. Also, as promised, Oliver approached the subject more from a “process” perspective than the Donald Trump-led-clown-car angle favored by other late-night shows. In his first stab at the subject, Oliver delved into the way some states have made it tougher to register to vote.

“Studies have shown that these restrictions tend to disproportionately impact African American and Latino voters. In Texas, experts found that African American voters were nearly twice as likely to lack voter ID, and Latinos are nearly two and a half times as likely. It’s one of those things white people seem to more likely to have – like a sunburn, or an Oscar nomination.”
