EXCLUSIVE: Lots of people lay claim to the title of being the busiest person in showbiz, but John Legend is turning out to be a front-runner. With the upcoming Underground series on WGN America, the Sundance-premiering Obamas first-date pic Southside With YouNeal Brennan‘s one-man show 3 Mics and more on the slate of his Get Lifted Film Co., Legend has signed on to The Infamous, I’ve learned.

Get Lifted will serve as the production company for the A&E Network hip-hop drama pilot with the Oscar winner plus partners Mike Jackson and Ty Stiklorius serving as EPs. Set in the highly charged atmosphere of pre-1992-riots L.A., The Infamous tracks a South Compton gangster (Bokeem Woodbine) trying to go straight and an LAPD detective (Wilson Bethel) trying to take him down. Talks to get Get Lifted involved in the pilot started a few weeks back.

Written and EP’d by Gambit scribe Joshua Zetumer, The Infamous also has Color Force’s Nina Jacobson’s and Brad Simpson on board as EPs. Also starring Emily Rios, filming on the Anthony Hemingway-directed pilot starts in the City of Angels on March 6.

“John, Ty and I are so excited to be a part of such an incredible show and working alongside such great partners in Anthony, Josh, Brad and Nina,” Jackson told me today. ”The Infamous deals with many issues surrounding race and social injustice set against the backdrop of 1990s Los Angeles and unfortunately many of these issues still exist today — for Get Lifted we’re always ready to help shine a light on these types of stories.”
