J.K. Simmons has joined Mark Wahlberg in the cast of Patriots Day, the CBS Films and Lionsgate pic that chronicles the events surrounding the 2013 Boston Marathon bombing. Peter Berg is directing the script from Oscar-nominated Bridge Of Spies co-scribe Matt Charman. Scott Stuber, Wahlberg, Hutch Parker, Dylan Clark, Stephen Levinson and Michael Radutzky are producing. The film starts shooting next month in Boston, so this is starting to cast up.

Simmons will play Watertown PD Sgt. Jeffrey Pugliese, who distinguished himself in combat with Tamerlan and Dzhokhar Tsarnaev. Wahlberg plays a composite Boston cop who is central to the investigation and manhunt.

Radutzky is the 60 Minutes senior producer who leads the broadcast’s creative development unit, 60 Minutes Productions. The movie will benefit from the research done for the memorable segment that the newsmagazine generated right after the bombing. It’s the first time CBS Films has done a project with its sibling division 60 Minutes, and it will handle production and advertising for this movie which Lionsgate will distribute.

Simmons is repped by Gersh.
