Oscilloscope opened Embrace Of The Serpent this weekend, the final Best Foreign Language Oscar nominee to hit the U.S. Last, perhaps, but certainly not least. The Colombian film had the best per theater average of all, grossing over $50K in 3 locations. Embrace Of The Serpent also had the highest PTA of the weekend’s reporting newcomers, followed by another foreign title, Neerja from Fox Star Studios India, grossing over $585K from 73 runs. Michael Moore’s latest, Where To Invade Next, lost theaters in its second weekend but still took over $560K in 275 locations. And SPC added several hundred locations for Maggie Smith starrer The Lady In The Van, close to doubling its cume in its sixth weekend.

Colombia’s first Best Foreign Language Oscar nominee, Embrace Of The Serpent opened at Film Forum and Lincoln Plaza in NYC Wednesday, followed Friday by L.A.’s Nuart, grossing over $50K Friday to Sunday in the three locations, averaging $16,722.

SPC’s Oscar nominee Son Of Saul (Hungary) came fairly close with a $12,643 average in three theaters. Son Of Saul is the only such nom to cross a million. Perhaps Embrace Of The Serpent has a shot at that number, and Oscilloscope didn’t hold back Sunday: “We expect these reviews and exceptional grosses to resonate in the minds of Academy voters as they make their final decisions this week. Embrace Of The Serpent will add approximately 20 locations next weekend in the Bay Area, and New York and Los Angeles suburbs.”

Fox Star Studios opened Neerja, a biopic based on a true incident involving the 1986 hijacking of a Pan American Airways flight from Bombay to New York and how a 23-year-old flight attendant, Neerja Bhanot, managed to deal with the hijackers and save more than 350 passengers, losing her own life in the process. The title opened to a solid start in 73 theaters, grossing $585,315 in the U.S. (it also opened other global territories including India), averaging $8,018. “Youth in India are exposed to content from across the world on digital platforms and TV channels and desire to see new breakthrough content, and the success of different genre films over the last few years has encouraged film companies to explore unique stories and concepts,” said Rohit Sharma, head of international sales and distribution at Fox Star Studios India earlier this week. “It’s a very relevant story in today’s world.”

Opening decently was Cohen Media Group’s City Of Women which grossed $7K in a single location. Lionsgate’s Busco Movio Para Mi Mujer was actually the biggest grossing Specialty opener to report numbers Sunday. The Mexican feature by Enrique Begne opened in 357 theaters, grossing $900K ($2,521 average). Also opening this weekend, in 17 cities and on digital platforms, was legal-pot docu Rolling Papers, but distributer Alchemy had not released box office figures by mid-day Sunday. Same for Music Box Films’ We Are Twisted F*cking Sister!, in a half-dozen locations.

Michael Moore’s latest Where To Invade Next went into its second frame in 33 fewer theaters than its opening weekend, though it is already closing in on $2 million, which will — in all likelihood — make it one of the best grossing documentaries of 2016. Still, it may be a tough slog for it to reach the $14.36M gross of his last film, Capitalism: A Love Story, which was more modest than his 2007 feature, Sicko ($24.54 million). Moore’s Cannes Palme d’Or winner Fahrenheit 9/11 is, of course, the highest grossing documentary of all time, grossing over $119.19 million back in 2004, though George W. Bush still won.

Touched With Fire

Roadside Attractions added 61 locations for Touched With Fire starring Katie Holmes and Luke Kirby in its second frame. It grossed just $65,716, averaging $981 for a cume of almost $92K. In better holdover news, Sony Classics added 410 theaters for the sixth weekend of The Lady In The Van, grossing over $1.5 million in 540 theaters, averaging a solid $2,780. That was a healthy chunk of change added to its overall gross which is now just over $3.8 million. SPC also added 25 theaters for its Oscar nominee Son Of Saul in its 10th weekend of U.S. release, grossing $84,194 ($1,123 average), for a cume of nearly $1.112 million.

Sundance Selects added 9 theaters over the previous weekend for 45 Years starring Oscar nominee Charlotte Rampling. The title is still holding with a $339,480 gross in 246 theaters ($1,380 average), bringing its cume to over $3.38 million.

The trio of Best Picture Oscar nominees Brooklyn, Spotlight and Room are still the stars of the Specialty Box Office. Searchlight’s Brooklyn starring Best Actress nominee Saoirse Ronan was the biggest weekend grosser at $728K ($1,643 average in 443 theaters), followed by Open Road’s Spotlight at over $515K ($1,285 average) and A24’s Room starring fellow Best Actress nominee Brie Larson taking in $417,702K in 352 theaters ($1,187 average). Spotlight still holds the highest cume mantle of the three at $38 million, followed by Brooklyn with $35.3 million and Room at $12.66 million.
