Universal Pictures has acquired an untitled comedy musical pitch based on an original idea from 21 Jump Street scribe Michael Bacall and Joseph Gordon-Levitt. Gordon-Levitt and Channing Tatum are attached to star, and Bacall will write the screenplay. The plot is under wraps. This is for Marc Platt Productions which is coming off producing Fox’s musical Grease Live. Its Marc Platt and Adam Siegel are producing with Tatum, Reid Carolin and Peter Kiernan of Free Association and Gordon-Levitt for hitRECord Films. Kristin Lowe is overseeing for the studio.
If the film comes to be, it will remind of a couple years ago when 20th Century Fox closed movie rights to Guys And Dolls, and the studio wanted Tatum and Gordon-Levitt in the roles made famous by Frank Sinatra and Marlon Brando.
This is not new territory for Universal, either. It made one of 2015’s biggest material deals back in April, acquiring for seven figures an untitled musical comedy hatched by Josh Gad and writer-director Jeremy Garelick, with original music to be provided by Oscar-winning composer-lyricists Alan Menken and Stephen Schwartz.
THR first broke the news of the new Universal pic.
