Studiocanal’s Bastille Day is headed to UK cinemas on April 22 after some release date wrangling in the wake of the Paris terror attacks last November. The first trailer for the thriller, which sees Idris Elba as a CIA agent trying to thwart a terrorist attack on French soil, is above. As recently as last month, plans were still up in the air as to release dates given the sensitivity of the subject. It’s now also set for July 13 in France — one day ahead of the actual Bastille Day holiday — and remains undated through Focus in the U.S.
Richard Madden also stars with Elba, Kelly Reilly and Charlotte Le Bon. Directed by James Watkins (The Woman In Black, Eden Lake), the story follows Michael Mason (Madden), an American pickpocket living in Paris who finds himself hunted by the CIA when he steals a bag that contains more than just a wallet. Sean Briar (Elba), the field agent on the case, soon realizes that Michael is just a pawn in a much bigger game and is also his best asset to uncover a large-scale conspiracy. The two work together to track down the source of the corruption over a 24-hour period during which they discover they are both targets and must rely upon each other in order to take down a common enemy.
One means to getting there is evidently kicking in doors — which happens a lot in the trailer above. Also seen here are rooftop chases and punch-ups as Elba’s self-proclaimed “reckless and irresponsible” Briar goes rogue.
