Following the success of the Serial podcast, there were a number of drama projects sold to the broadcast networks this season that were in that vein. One of them has now been picked up to pilot. ABC has greenlighted The Jury, a drama written by Justified writer-producer VJ Boyd and Mark Bianculli (MTV pilot Self Promotion) and executive produced by CSI alumna Carol Mendelsohn. The project, from Sony Pictures TV, where Mendelsohn is under an overall deal, landed at ABC in August with a significant penalty, said to be in a high-six-figure range that often qualifies as a “put.”
The Jury examines “the ultimate social experiment” that happens thousands of times a day in the U.S.: a person’s fate is placed in the hands of 12 strangers. Described as “12 Angry Men meets the podcast Serial,” the series follows a single murder trial a season as seen through the eyes of the individual jurors, exploring the biases and experiences that influence the jurors’ judgment, and how their preconceptions change along the way. Boyd executive produces with Carol Menselsohn Prods’ Mendelsohn and Julie Weitz; Bianculli co-executive produces.
Mendelsohn also has upcoming NBC drama series Game Of Silence.
