Fox has given a pilot order to drama The Exorcist, a modern reinvention inspired by William Blatty’s 1971 book.

Morgan Creek, which hFox logo horizontalas the rights to the property, took out the Exorcist drama series project, penned by young feature writer Jeremy Slater (Fantastic Four), in the summer 2013, around the 40th anniversary of William Friedkin’s classic horror movie adaptation. After a lengthy pursuit and deal-making, the genre drama has landed a pilot order at Fox, with sibling 20th Century Fox TV producing alongside Morgan Creek Prods.

The Exorcist is described as a propulsive, serialized psychological thriller following two very different men tackling one family’s case of horrifying demonic possession and confronting the face of true evil.

Slater, who wrote the script, executive produces alongside James Robinson, David Robinson and Barbara Wall.

At Fox, Exorcist joins another drama pilot with instant name recognition, 24 offshoot 24: Legacy, as well as Lee Daniels’ music drama and Dan Fogelman’s baseball project.
