It has become an annual tradition one of ABC’s first drama pilot orders to go to a Shondaland project. This year, it is Still Star-Crossed, a Romeo and Juliet sequel drama from Heather Mitchell, co-executive producer on Shonda Rhimes’ Scandal.
Additionally, I hear Please Don’t Go, a female divorce attorney drama from We Are Your Friends scribe Meaghan Oppenheimer and Reese Witherspoon also is heating up.
Still Star-Crossed, which ABC landed in October in a competitive situation, is based on the book by Melinda Taub. Set in 16th century Verona, it picks up where William Shakespeare’s Romeo & Juliet left off, charting the treachery, palace intrigue and ill-fated romances of the Montagues and Capulets in the wake of the young lovers’ tragic fate.
Mitchell wrote the script and is executive producing with Shondaland’s Rhimes and Betsy Beers as well as The MrG Production Co.’s Michael R. Goldstein. ABC Studios, where Shondaland is based, is the studio.
At ABC, Still Star-Crossed joins drama pilots The Jury, Marvel’s Most Wanted, and John Ridley’s Presence as well as the Kiefer Sutherland series Designated Survivor.
Mitchell, repped by UTA, first worked on Rhimes’ Grey’s Anatomy before joining Scandal after the pilot.
Shondaland currently has four series on ABC, Grey’s Anatomy, Scandal, How To Get Away with Murder and the upcoming The Catch.
Rhimes is repped by ICM Partners and Gendler & Kelly. Taub is with ICM Partners and Underground. Goldstein is with ICM Partners and Sloane, Offer.
