After a surprise Best Supporting Actor win by Christian Slater earlier tonight, Mr. Robot proved once again that the Hollywood Foreign Press Association loves a freshmen. The USA Network hacker series created by Sam Esmail won the Best Television Series – Drama at tonight’s Golden Globes.
From the stage, Esmail thanked “our amazing cast led by the amazing Rami Malek,” who he also called his best friend.
With Malek, who was up for Best TV Drama Actor tonight, Mr. Robot tracks high tech security engineer Eliot, played Malek, as he starts to focuses his socially awkward and slightly drug addled mindset and skills on snaring the likes of child pornographers in his spare time. That pastime turns to hunting bigger corporate game with bigger consequences when he cautiously meets up with the charismatic Mr. Robot, portrayed by Slater and his band of digital misfits.
Season 1 of Mr. Robot debuted on June 24 after the pilot had been online for almost a month. The show was named as one of the Top 10 TV series of 2015 by the AFI Awards. Season 2 is expected to debut later this year. The show was up against Fox’s Empire, HBO’s Game Of Thrones, Netflix’s Narcos and Starz’ Outlander tonight.
