“When it comes to dating,” said Simon Rich, creator/EP of FXX’s Man Seeking Woman at TCA today, “it doesn’t matter who you are: It’s a living nightmare. And it’s something we strive to capture this year.” While the first season dealt with the single-guy follies of Jay Baruchel’s Josh Greenberg, season 2 will delve into the all the characters’ dating mishaps.

“This season is about unrequited love,” said Rich. “For the characters, through no fault of their own, they fall for the wrong people.”

In an effort to stray from any kind of tired sketch comedy sensibility, Rich and his fellow EP Jonathan Krisel aim to keep Man Seeking Woman character-driven. “One of the bigger arcs of the season isn’t between Josh and a woman,” Rich said, but between Josh and his best friend Mike (Eric Andre).

“We learn that Mike, for all his male chauvinism, deep down he’s just vulnerable. Speaking about his approach to story, Rich explained, “As long as it’s emotionally honest, it doesn’t matter how crazy it is. It’s a very autobiographical story. We start with real life dating situations.”

Soon after Man Seeking Woman landed a second season order, FX Prods. signed Rich and his production company, Allegash Industries, to a two-year overall deal. In addition to Man Seeking Woman, Rich is developing future FXP series.

In its season 2 debut January 6, Man Seeking Woman hit a series high in its demo and total viewership. The season runs through March 9.
