Following the release of their Oscar-nominated toon The Boxtrolls, Laika and Focus Features are teaming again on Kubo And The Two Strings, the first film under Laika and the studio’s three-picture deal. The latest stop-motion pic is set in ancient Japan and follows Kubo, a young boy who makes an honest living telling tales to the people of his seaside town. His humble existence is interrupted by a spirit from the past that has returned to enforce an age-old vendetta. Now on the run, Kubo must locate a magical suit of armor once worn by his late father, a legendary samurai warrior. With the help of his shamisen – a magical musical instrument – Kubo must battle gods and monsters to unlock the secret of his legacy, reunite his family and fulfill his heroic destiny.
Laika CEO Travis Knight makes his directorial debut from a script by Marc Haimes and Chris Butler. Matthew McConaughey and Charlize Theron voice the characters of Beetle and Monkey, who join Kubo on the quest to save his family. Art Parkinson (Kubo), Rooney Mara, Ralph Fiennes, George Takei, Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa and Brenda Vaccaro also provide voices. Focus has set an August 19 release date.
