Hollywood is taking another step toward the normalization of the relations between the U.S. and Cuba. Showtime’s dark comedy series House Of Lies is heading to the Caribbean island to film its fifth-season finale, marking the first time an American scripted series will be shot in the country since the U.S. and Cuba restored diplomatic relations last summer.
The cast, led by star/executive producer Don Cheadle, will travel in the next week for the shoot, set to set to take place in and around the capital Havana. The season finale will be directed by House Of Lies creator Matthew Carnahan. The penultimate Season 5 episode, which will set up the Cuba-themed closer, is being directed by Carnahan’s wife, actress-director Helen Hunt.
House Of Lies, which is based on the book by Martin Kihn, stars Cheadle as manipulative management consultant Marty Kaan. In the upcoming fifth season, Marty is a man with a singular focus – ascending from millionaire mogul to global dominator. No longer content with fleecing big-money clients, he’s upping the stakes in a highly calculated winner-take-all power play that will land him and the Pod – Jeannie (Kristen Bell), Clyde (Ben Schwartz) and Doug (Josh Lawson) – in Cuba.
“Marty and the pod have traveled the world to land clients,” said Cheadle. “But this historic trip to Cuba is definitely Kaan & Associates’ biggest and wildest adventure yet. It’s sure to be one for the record books, for both our characters and for our cast and crew.”
Guest stars for the fifth season include Wanda Sykes as a love interest for Jeremiah (Glynn Turman), Keegan-Michael Key as the CEO of a hair care line and Ken Marino as a love interest for Jeannie. Malcolm-Jamal Warner, John Cho, Donald Faison and Nicky Whelan also guest star. Carnahan executive produces with Jessika Borsiczky, Cheadle and David Walpert.
House of Lies’ Cuba shoot is being done in compliance with the U.S. Department of Treasury pursuant to an Office of Foreign Assets Control license following all appropriate U.S. laws. US TV shows that have already filmed on the island include Discovery’s reality series Cuban Chrome, which shot entirely on location there, and TBS’ late-night talk show Conan.
Carnahan also directed the Season 1, 3 and 4 finales and Season 2 premiere of House of Lies. Hunt previously directed an episode of another dark Showtime comedy, Californication, and recently helmed an episode of CBS’ freshman comedy Life In Pieces.
