EXCLUSIVE: Dan Mazer, all-around comic whiz and long-time Sacha Baron Cohen collaborator, has come on-board to co-write, direct and exec produce Three Miles North Of Molkom for Euro film major StudioCanal. Graham Broadbent and Czernin’s Blueprint Pictures are producing. Also writing the script is Jamie Minoprio & Jonathan Stern. StudioCanal will finance and distribute in its territories and handle international sales.
The feature project is inspired by Robert Cannan and Corinna McFarlane’s docu about Angsbacka, a 21st century playground hidden deep in the lakeside forests of Sweden, three miles north of Molkom. There, once a year, the gates open to a thousand international participants, who proceed to take part in a two-week extravaganza incorporating everything from tantric sex to firewalking and shamanism, The film is believed to follows a jock character, who gets separated from his backpacking friends and winds up at the New Age festival by accident.
Mazer’s Dirty Grandpa, starring Robert De Niro and Zac Efron, opens domestically January 22 via Lionsgate. He was an integral part of Baron Cohen’s ascent as writer and producer on Ali G, Borat and Bruno. Molkom also reps a reunion for Mazer with StudioCanal after the two worked together on Mazer’s feature directorial debut I Give It A Year, a rom-com that Brit production powerhouse Working Title produced. That film was one of the freshest and funniest rom-coms in years and established Mazer as a genuine heavyweight in his own right. StudioCanal, under the guidance of UK chief Danny Perkins, has established itself as the leading indie in the UK in 2015 , boosted by the likes of Tom Hardy-starrer Legend.
Blueprint is also enjoying success, having consolidated its position as one of the UK’s leading production companies with the likes of The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel and its sequel as well as The Riot Club. It is currently in post on James Marsh’s Donald Crowthurst biopic starring Colin Firth and Rachel Weisz. Latter pic is also with StudioCanal.
Mazer is repped by United Agents, 3 Arts Entertainment and CAA.
