As an early Christmas present (or late, depending on your perspective), Miramax and Broad Green have announced that principal photography has begun on Bad Santa 2. The sequel to 2003 black comedy sees Billy Bob Thorton reprising his role as professional thief Willie Stokes, who poses as a department store Santa to case likely spots to burglarize. The film also sees Tony Cox returning as Stokes’ former partner in crime Marcus, and Brett Kelly returning to play Thurman Merman, the young boy in the original film whom Stokes mentored (after a fashion). They’re joined by Ryan Hansen, comedian Jenny Zigrino, Jeff Skowron, Christina Hendricks, and Kathy Bates, who plays Stokes’ mother.

Mark Waters (Mean Girls) is directing from a script by Johnny Rosenthal, Doug Ellin, and Shauna Cross. Bad Santa 2 is filming in Montreal. Miramax and Broad Green Pictures are co-financing and co-producing, with Broad Green handling U.S. theatrical distribution and Sierra/Affinity is handling foreign sales. Geyer Kosinski (the Fargo television series) and Andrew Gunn are producing, with Miramax’s Zanne Devine and David Thwaites, Broad Green’s Gabriel and Daniel Hammond, Mark Waters, Jessica Tuchinsky, Adam Fields, and Doug Ellin executive producing. It’s scheduled to hit theaters November 23.

dayoutofdaysMarVista Entertainment has acquired the rights to Day Out Of Days, the second feature from Zoe Cassavetes (Broken English) that world premiered during the Los Angeles Film Festival and premiered internationally at the Deauville Film Festival. Starring Alexia Landeau, the film tells the story of Mia Rourke, a 40 year old actress facing irrelevance in an increasingly youth-oriented culture who chooses to reinvent the second act of her life rather than be pushed out of acting at such a young age. Christa B. Allen, Melanie Griffith, Eddie Izzard, Cheyenne Jackson, Vincent Kartheiser, Alessandro Nivola, Brooke Smith, and Bellamy Young also star.
