'Hateful Eight', 'Revenant', 'Star Wars', 'Mad Max' Among Cinema Audio Society Nominees

The Cinema Audio Society has announced the nominees for the 52nd Annual CAS Awards for Outstanding Achievement in Sound Mixing for film and TV, as well as the CAS Technical Achievement Award Nominations for 2015. Naturally, the crop of nominees is largely dominated by films and shows that have been lavished with awards love this season (and at the Emmys last September), though the awards bait films are facing competition from crowdpleasing favorites and some that managed to split the difference.

cinema-audio-society__120920064053The Hateful 8, The Revenant and Mad Max: Fury Road are going up against Bridge of Spies, which was barely noticed at the Golden Globes, and box office superpower Star Wars: The Force Awakens in the Live Action category. Meanwhile in the Animated Category, The Good Dinosaur, Inside Out and The Peanuts Movie are up against Hotel Transylvania and Minions, all of whom could end up nominated at the Academy Awards.

On television, American Horror Story is looking good, nominated twice in the miniseries, up against American Crime, Fargo and True Detective. In the hour-long category, Game of Thrones‘ best supporting actor emmy-winning episode “Hardhome” squares off against Better Call Saul, Homeland, House of Cards, and The Walking Dead.

“This was a year of terrific sound in both film and television,” said Mark Ulano CAS President. “These nominations represent the outstanding sound mixing being done in each category and I congratulate each of our nominees.”

Final balloting for both the Outstanding Sound Mixing and the CAS Technical Achievement Awards will open online January 27th and end February 12th. Winners will be awarded at a sealed envelope dinner on February 20th in the Crystal Ballroom of the Millennium Biltmore Hotel. During the awards the highest honor of the CAS – the CAS Career Achievement Award will be presented to ADR Mixer Doc Kane and the CAS Filmmaker Award will be given to Jay Roach. That evening, the Cinema Audio Society website will be updated in real time as the winners are announced.

  1. In the Feature film category, I happy to see several that worked on my films early in both our careers. So congratulations to Drew Kunin (did Down Twisted for me and have been his first as a production sound mixer), Mike Minkler (who’s dad own a sound house and he kindly did a mix for one of my early 16mm efforts), Frank Montano (Frank did a number of my Cannon efforts and he was really a tech I encouraged to move into mixing. He did my crazy temp mixes as training. His first mixing efforts), Chris Jenkins (did Down Twisted for me and was really cool with my ideas all of which violated Dolby standards). They were more talented than me or my films. But all were generous with their time and never made me feel that they were not giving their best effort. All are better humans than sound artists. Well deserved and they make their films better for their artistry.
