Proof that not all blockbusters need superheroes or space wizards to make a splash, when the first trailer for My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2 dropped back in November, the Internet exploded (and so did pageviews on our post.) Clearly, people want to see it. Yet, since then, there’s been nary a peep about the film, understandable since it doesn’t come out until March 25 and there’s a notably huge movie sucking up all the conversation this month. But, now that the release week of Star Wars: The Force Awakens is out of the way, Greek Wedding 2 has slipped in a new poster, just in time for Christmas. Check it out below.
Returning more than a decade after the original film became an enormous cultural sensation, My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2 sees Toula (Nia Vardalos) grappling with the fact that her daughter Paris is now a teenager applying to faraway colleges to escape her smothering family. Into that situation comes the news that Toula’s parents (Lainie Kazan and Michael Constantine again) never actually got their their marriage certificate signed and therefore technically aren’t hitched. Cue a bigger, fatter, even more Greek wedding.
But of course the film is closely linked to the original and wants audiences to remember the original they loved so much. So it is that the poster above is very much modeled on the original film’s poster. Here it is for comparison:
Along with Vardalos, Kazan and Constantine, John Corbett returns for Round 2 along with Andrea Martin, Louis Mandylor, Gia Carides and others, plus new invitees include John Stamos and Alex Wolff. Kirk Jones directs from Vardalos’ script, and Rita Wilson and Playtone partners Tom Hanks and Gary Goetzman are back to produce. My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2 walks down the aisle for Universal on March 25.
