The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has touched up its shortlist for the 2015 Best Makeup & Hairstyling Oscar. Seven films are in the chair including two that made A-list actors all but unrecognizable.
In Black Mass, Johnny Depp was transformed into Boston gangster Whitey Bulger, and The Revenant sees Leonardo DiCaprio as a bearded 19th century frontiersman.
Meanwhile, Mr Holmes aged Ian McKellen into a 93-year-old Sherlock Holmes. Legend stars Tom Hardy in a dual role as notorious mid-century London gangsters the Kray twins. Concussion sees Will Smith as Nigerian forensic pathologist Dr. Bennet Omalu. The 100-Year-Old Man Who Climbed Out The Window stars Robert Gustafsson, who was in his late 40s during production, as the titular centenarian. And Mad Max: Fury Road … well, just take a look at those half-life war boys.
The members of the Academy’s Makeup Artists and Hairstylists Branch will be invited to view 10-minute excerpts from each of the seven shortlisted films on January 9. Members then will vote to nominate three films for final Oscar consideration.
Oscar nominations will be announced January 14, and the trophies will be doled out on February 28 at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood. ABC will air the ceremony.
