Jonás Cuarón’s Desierto was one of the titles to watch at the Toronto Film Festival this year, with the migrant thriller starring Gael Garcia Bernal and Jeffrey Dean Morgan eventually selling to STX Entertainment. The studio has staked out a March 4 release.
The intense pic stars García Bernal as a member of a group trying to cross the unforgiving desert terrain along the U.S.-Mexico border. Their journey becomes a fight to survive when they find they are being hunted by a rifle-toting vigilante (Morgan), and there’s nowhere to hide. “Welcome to the land of the free,” Morgan says to himself after murdering one of the group. Alondra Hidalgo co-stars in Cuarón’s pic, which has those creepy elements of movies like Duel, at least in the trailer that dropped today. He has said he began conceptualizing this before he and father Alfonso Cuarón made Gravity, the Warner Bros hit that won seven Oscars.
Jonás Cuarón and Mateo García wrote the script and produced with Alfonso Cuarón, Carlos Cuarón, Alex García and Charles Gillibert. Check out the first trailer above, and tell us what you think.
