Screenwriter Lucinda Coxon and producers Gail Mutrux and Anne Harrison came to The Contenders Presented By Deadline last month to tell the tale of the long creative gestation of their film, The Danish Girlwhich took 15 years to get to the screen.

Directed by Tom Hooper and starring Eddie Redmayne and Alicia Vikander — both now nominated for acting honors from thecontenders-sold-out Golden Globes, Critics’ Choice Awards and SAG — the film has hit the zeitgeist in terms of public interest in all things transgender. But as they explain, at its heart is a universal love story, and that’s the tale they tell (with some other juicy morsels) they explained to a packed audience of AMPAS and key guild members at Deadline’s annual big awards season event held at the DGA Theatre.
