The 91-year-old Rigas was sentenced to 12 years in prison in 2005 in a looting and debt-hiding scandal. Rigas has two years left to serve and was told by the judge at sentencing he could be released early if he has less than three months to live. His lawyer says Rigas’ relatives have been told to “deal with end-of-life decisions”, including the possibility of hospice care, The Associated Press reports.
Adelphia, once the nation’s fifth-largest cable company, was founded by Rigas in Coudersport, PA.
Prosecutors were directed to respond to Rigas’ request by next Tuesday.
