“I’m back from the world’s shortest vacation,” Trevor Noah said in opening tonight’s The Daily Show. “Some of you may have heard, I was out yesterday with a touch of emergency appendectomy surgery.”

American health care system jokes followed – It should be two rooms “one for emergencies and one for people who can fill out forms” — and so on.

“Big thank you to everyone,” Noah continued. “And of course, Comedy Central for giving me one day off. I’m joking!” Noah grinned, explaining the network told him to take off as much time as he needed but he was anxious to get back to work. People got agitated when the network said he would be back tonight. “People were writing things like, ‘Comedy Central — one day off after surgery?! Is it because he’s black?!’,” Noah said. “The best message I got was,  ‘Is it Comedy Central, or the cotton fields?'”

Earlier, Noah had tweeted he would return to late-night show this evening:

And, in response to Jimmy Fallon’s get-well tweet, he also tweeted this:

Yesterday morning, the network canceled last night’s episode, explaining, “Trevor Noah underwent an emergency appendectomy early this morning. We’re happy to report the procedure went well and he is currently recuperating from the surgery. As a result The Daily Show will air an encore tonight. We expect he and the show will be back with an original episode tomorrow.”

Noah was only about 18 episodes in to his tenure as new Daily Show host, when he took his unscheduled one day “vacation,” having replaced Jon Stewart on September 28. Comedy Central tapped the popular South African comedian to replace Jon Stewart in early March.
