With Thanksgiving nigh, here’s something for nerds like me to be especially thankful for: the first full trailer the CW’s upcoming DC’s Legends of Tomorrow. The series sees time-traveling rogue Rip Hunter journey to our era from a dystopian future in order to assemble a mismatched team of heroes and villains from the Arrow/Flash universe. The mission: to travel throughout time in order to prevent immortal supervillain Vandal Savage from taking over the world. Joining the team are Captain Cold, Heatwave and Firestorm from The Flash, with Atom and White Canary from Arrow along with newly introduced heroes Hawkman and Hawkgirl. The show premieres January 21.
Legends of Tomorrow officially establishes the Arrow-Flash setting as a shared cinematic universe — fitting, then, that in advance of the series’ debut, it’s getting a proper sendoff with a The Flash/Arrow crossover event called “Heroes Join Forces,” airing on December 1. Obviously, the whole thing is an attempt to do on TV what Marvel has pulled off with its hit film franchises, but I’m more intrigued by the fact that the CW is beating its parent company to the punch by two months. (Warner Bros officially launches its own cinematic film universe with Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice in March.)
DC’s Legends of Tomorrow stars Arthur Darvill as Rip Hunter, along with Victor Garber, Brandon Routh, Caity Lotz, Falk Hentschel, Ciara Renée, Franz Drameh, Dominic Purcell and Wentworth Miller.
