Spotlight, the feature film account of how The Boston Globe broke a major series of stories about the Catholic Church’s child sex abuse scandal that encompassed “not just Boston, it’s the whole country, the whole world” as one character puts it, figured prominently at Deadline’s The Contenders event Saturday. Director and co-writer Tom McCarthy, co-writer Josh Singer and producers Michael Sugar, Steve Golin and Nicole Rocklin were on hand for the discussion and screening of this featurette.

The picture opened in limited release in five theaters this weekend with the highest overall per-theater-average of $60,455 in an extremely competitive weekend. The movie opens nationwide November 20 and stars Mark Ruffalo, Michael Keaton, Rachel McAdams, Liev Schreiber, John Slattery, Brian d’Arcy James and Stanley Tucci.
