More than 50 years into the space age, it’s fair to say that humans have become pretty good at getting things into Earth’s orbit. The problem, however, remains that it’s expensive, resource intensive, and highly polluting to use rockets to get the job done. A more sustainable solution was proposed by Arthur C. Clarke in his 1979 novel The Fountains of Paradise: build an enormous elevator into orbit. The space elevator idea has been picked up since by a host of other science fiction writers, but technological and physics obstacles have so far prevented the concept from being developed in the real world.
That doesn’t mean people aren’t trying, however, and those of you wanting to know how it’s going are in luck. Directed by Miguel Drake-McLaughlin and Jonny Leahan, the documentary Sky Line depicts one such team of scientists and entrepreneurs as they attempt to solve the problems preventing a space elevator from being built, while egos, and competing visions clash. FilmBuff has licensed worldwide rights to Sky Line, and beginning November 20, 2015 the film will be released on all major VOD platforms, including Amazon, Google Play, iTunes, Vudu, and Xbox Live. The film also sees its theatrical debut during DOC NYC 2015. Robert Wood executive produced Skyline, and the deal was negotiated by Sam Scupp of FilmBuff.
THX ltd. has tapped digital media vet Ty Ahmad-Taylor as its new CEO, effective immediately. He’ll oversee development of THX’s core businesses as well as the expansion of the company into new business areas.
Prior to THX, Ahmad-Taylor has had over 18 years of experience in interactive television platforms, with 25 years total spent in information design. His most recent startup was acquired by Samsung in 2012, after which he held the position of Vice President of Smart TV. Before that, he was SVP of Strategy and Product Development for MTV Networks Music & Logo Group, and Senior Director of interactive Products and UI at Comcast.
