EXCLUSIVE: Sherri Shepherd, Michelle Hurst, Mamoudou Athie, Erica Ash, Gloria Reuben, Francois Arnaud and newcomer Taylour Paige have been set to star in Stella Meghie’s Jean Of The Joneses, an indie comedic drama that is kicking off production now in New York and Toronto. Search Engine Films will distribute in Canada, with all other territories available.
Meghie wrote and is making her feature directorial debut on the pic, which centers on 25-year-old Jean (Paige, pictured right) and her multi-generational, dysfunctional, middle-class Jamaican-American family of strong-minded, stubborn yet incredibly loving women. When an estranged grandfather dies on the doorstep of the family’s brownstone during Sunday dinner, tensions rise, old conflicts come to a boil, and things come to an arresting stop as Jean uncovers the family’s buried secrets.
The Toronto-born Meghie’s script was one of 10 selected to participate in Tribeca Film Festival’s 2014 Tribeca All Access Program. She has a blind script deal with Warner Bros. and a comedy pilot optioned by BET Networks.
Circle Blue Media’s Amos Adetuyi is producing Joneses with Floyd Kane. Poke Prod principals Sean Dwyer and Elizabeth Cullen are executive producers. Telefilm Canada and T Tenth Productions Inc., a subsidiary of Radio One, are co-financing.
Meghie is repped by MetaMorphic Entertainment; Paige by Abrams Artists Agency; Shepherd by ICM Partners; Reuben, Arnaud and Ash by APA; Athie by Gersh; and Hurst by Harden Curtis.
