The team behind the Harold & Kumar films have a new TV home at Lionsgate. Writer-director-producers Jon Hurwitz & Hayden Schlossberg have inked a first-look television deal with the company to develop and produce original, scripted comedy programming. The first project in the pact is Fair and Balanced, a single-camera comedy that was set up at ABC two weeks ago.
“With their spectacularly successful, fan-favorite Harold & Kumar franchise, Jon Hurwitz & Hayden Schlossberg proved that they understand serialization, and as Lionsgate TV’s programming further expands into comedy, we are thrilled to help bring their unique comedic perspective to television,” said Chris Selak, EVP Television at Lionsgate.
Hurwitz & Schlossberg wrote Fair and Balanced, which reunites the duo with their Kumar star Kal Penn, who spent time working for President Obama. He stars as an up-and-coming NPR reporter who is swayed to work at a staunchly conservative news channel. Hurwitz & Schlossberg will executive produce under their Hurwitz & Schlossberg Productions banner, and Penn also will executive produce alongside his manager and producing partner Dan Spilo of Industry Entertainment. Matt Lottman, Director of Development at Hurwitz & Schlossberg Productions, will serve as co-producer.
“Like many filmmakers today, we’re excited about the creative possibilities of television, and equally excited to be working with Lionsgate, given their incredible track record of producing groundbreaking shows,” Hurwitz and Schlossberg said in a statement. “We look forward to adding some subversive comedy to their highly respected brand.”
Hurwitz & Schlossberg also relaunched the American Pie franchise with 2012’s American Reunion and have several film projects at various studios around town, including The Pact at Good Universe, which they are producing along with Seth Rogen & Evan Goldberg’s Point Grey Pictures for Kay Cannon to direct.
