The Palm Springs Film Festival will present Johnny Depp with the annual Desert Palm Achievement Award, Actor for his role as Whitey Bulger in Warner Bros’ Black Mass. The honor will be presented at the fest’s awards gala January 2 alongside actress Desert Palm recipient Cate Blanchett, who stars in both Carol and Truth. Palm Spring also is honoring Saoirse Ronan (Brooklyn) with the International Star Award as it rolls out its annual honors. The fest runs January 1-11.

This is the second SoCal fest hat-tip for Depp, a potential Best Actor Oscar contender for his roll in Scott Cooper’s mobster biopic. A month after Palm Springs, Depp will receive the Maltin Modern Master Award at the Santa Barbara Film Festival.

Santa Barbara, meanwhile, tapped Depp co-star Joel Edgerton, Love & Mercy duo Elizabeth Banks and Paul Dano, and Room‘s young star Jacob Tremblay to receive its Virtuosos Award which goes to a group of actors who have distinguished themselves through performances in film this past year. That fest runs February 3-13.
