ABC is is developing El Chiringuito De Pepe, a comedic one-hour based on the popular Spanish series. Written/executive produced by Don Todd (Samantha Who?) and executive produced by Jason Winer, the project has received a script commitment with penalty. 20th Century Fox TV, where Winer’s Small Dob Picture Co. is based, is the studio.
The project is described as a faithful adaptation of Spain’s hit comedy-drama about family, love, culture and class. It centers on a world-famous chef who comes to a small beach town to work his magic on his father’s failing cantina and is surprised to find the town working its own magic on him. Also executive producing are Sergio Aguero and Jaime Davila of Campanario Entertainment.
Created by Curro Velázquez, El Chiringuito De Pepe, produced by 100 Balas and Mediaset, got off to a big ratings start on Telecinco last year, premiering to more than 4.6 million viewers or 24.6% to rank as the most-watched Spanish scripted series debut on the network in nine years. This marks the latest Spansih series to get an U.S. remake. NBC’s The Mysteries of Laura and last fall’s Fox drama Red Band Society last season are adaptations of Spanish series, and ABC is developing a drama based on Motivos Personales, with Ellen Pompeo producing. Winer serves as executive producer/director of CBS’ freshman comedy series Life In Pieces, recently given a full-season pickup. He is repped by ICM Partners and Mosaic. Under his overall deal at 20th TV, Todd serves as executive producer of the upcoming Fox/20th TV drama Lookinglass. He is repped by Rothman Brecher Agency.
