Paolo Sorrentino’s Youth leads the field of nominees for the European Film Awards that were unveiled today in Seville, Spain. The English-language drama competed at the Cannes Film Festival earlier this year and has enjoyed a strong box office run in the helmer’s home country of Italy.  A bittersweet reflection on life, Youth scored five mentions, including Best European Film, Director, and Screenplay, as well as acting nominations for Rachel Weisz and Michael Caine. Fox Searchlight is handling the U.S. release in December.

The EFAs have become a strong indicator of the eventual Foreign Language Oscar winner, recently giving the top prize to Sorrentino’s own The Great Beauty, Michael Haneke’s Amour and last year’s Ida which all went on to win in Hollywood. But even if Youth wins at the EFAs in Berlin on December 12, it will have no impact on the Foreign Language Oscar race given it’s largely in English and is not Italy’s entry this year. Of the other movies in the top EFA category, three are their countries’ reps: Sweden’s A Pigeon Sat On A Branch Reflecting On Existence which won the Golden Lion in Venice last year; France’s Mustang; and Icelandic dramedy Rams. In a surprise twist, Hungarian director Laszlo Nemes’ Cannes breakout Son Of Saul is not among the nominees.

Rounding out the main category is Cannes competitor The Lobster from Yorgos Lanthimos. The Best Comedy race includes A Pigeon, French box office smash The Bélier Family and Belgium’s The Brand New Testament from Jaco Van Dormael. All of the nominations unveiled today are below.
