EXCLUSIVE: Rising Brit thesp Damson Idris has joined the cast of indie drama Meagen Leavey opposite Kate Mara. Gabriela Cowperthwaite directs the biopic based on the true story of Megan Leavey, a young Marine who turned her life around by enlisting in the K9 unit. There, she was teamed with an aggressive combat dog named Rex. The pair formed a special bond and were deployed to Iraq as an elite bomb-sniffing team. Together they served two tours of duty and completed more than 100 missions, saving innumerable lives. Tom Felton, Bradley Whitford, Edie Falco and Will Patton also star.

The film is Cowperthwaite’s follow up to her critically acclaimed feature documentary Blackfish, which looked into the events that led to the death of a SeaWorld trainer who was killed by an orca in 2010. Cowperthwaite directs from a script by Pamela Gray (Conviction), with additional material by Annie Mumolo (Joy), Tim Lovestedt (Groundlings), and Jordan Roberts (Big Hero 6). The film is produced by Mickey Liddell (The Grey), Jennifer Monroe (Disconnect) and Pete Shilaimon (Anthropoid) on behalf of LD Entertainment. UTA will rep North American sales.

Idris recently wrapped Pete Travis’ City Of Tiny Lights opposite Riz Ahmed and Kush Jumbo and also has John Singleton’s Snowfall in the pipelines. He is repped by WME, Luber Roklin and Identity Agency Group.
