The Irish spirit came to our big awards-season event The Contenders Presented By Deadline, which took place earlier this month in front of a packed DGA theater full of AMPAS and guild members. Director John Crowley, producer Fiona Dwyer and star Saoirse Ronan joined me for a conversationthe contenders event sold out about their luminous and romantic drama Brooklynwhich Fox Searchlight brought as part of their Contenders presentation. The movie, which details the choice a young woman must make between two men and two countries, puts a personal face on the whole subject of immigration which has been much in the news this campaign season.

As Crowley says, it is a very singular human story that becomes a very important story because it doesn’t lump everyone who has emigrated to America as “them.” Ronan, whose own parents emigrated from Ireland to New York (where she was born) tells how she found the story to be a very personal one for her that was also about the female experience in particular. Dwyer discusses how she discovered the book that Nick Hornby would later beautifully adapt to the screen.
