EXCLUSIVE: Andy Garcia has booked a pair of roles that will put him in two separate cross-hairs: He has joined Netflix’s film True Memoirs Of An International Assassin starring Kevin James and landed a season-long arc on HBO’s series Ballers.
In Assassin, which Netflix acquired in May at Cannes, Garcia will play El Toro, a Venezuelan revolutionary leader fronting as a modern-day Che Guevara. Jeff Wadlow is directing Jeff Morris’ Black List script, which centers on James’ mild-mannered accountant and would-be author who is mistaken for a killer-for-hire when his fictional novel about an international assassin is published as a true story. Thrown into a world of real danger, he must find a way to channel his lead character Colt Rodgers and save the day.
In HBO’s half-hour comedy Ballers, Garcia will play a high-profile financial guy who is the nemesis of Spencer Strassmore (Dwayne Johnson) — they have history in the sports world and it’s not good. HBO renewed the series for a second season in July. It centers on the lives of former and current football players including Johnson’s Strasmore, who is trying to reinvent himself as a financial manager for players.
Garcia is repped by CAA and Brillstein Entertainment Partners.
