EXCLUSIVE: Screen Gems’ romantic comedy feature franchise Think Like A Man is heading to television with its creative team on board.
Fox is developing Think Like A Man, a single-camera comedy executive produced by comedian Steve Harvey, on whose best-selling advice book the movies were based, and by the films’ producer Will Packer. Keith Merryman and David A. Newman, who wrote the 2012 movie and the 2014 sequel Think Like A Man Too, will pen the TV adaptation and will executive produce. Tim Story, who directed both movies, will helm the potential pilot and also executive produce, along with Gerald Washington, president of Harvey’s East 112th Street Productions. Will Packer Prods.’ Korin D. Huggins co-executive produces.
Screen Gems’ sibling Sony Pictures Television is the studio, producing alongside East 112th Street and Endemol Shine Studios where Harvey’s company recently inked an overall deal.
Based on the movie franchise and Harvey’s book, the Think Like A Man series explores the never-ending battle of the sexes from four very different points of view: newly married, moving in, breaking up and hooking up. Featuring both the male and female perspectives, our couples and their friends will realize that it’s easy to fall in love and “be” in love but not necessarily stay in love.
Think Like A Man was a box office breakout, opening with $34 million in 2012 en route to a $91.5 million haul in North America on a $12.5 million budget. It spawned the 2014 sequel Think Like A Man Too, with the original ensemble cast returning including Michael Ealy, Jerry Ferrara, Meagan Good, Regina Hall, Kevin Hart, Terrence J, Taraji P. Henson, Romany Malco and Gabrielle Union. Here is a trailer for the original movie:
In addition to the the two Think Like A Man features, Merryman and Newman wrote Friends With Benefits for Screen Gems. They are writing the remake of the hit Spanish-language comedy Instructions Not Included for Lionsgate and have been working on a production polish for CBS Films’ The Ex Games, which Andy Fickman will direct. They are repped by APA, Writ Large and attorney Mitch Smelkinson.
Think Like A Man falls outside of Packer’s overall deal at Universal TV, under which Will Packer Prods is shepherding two series: Truth Be Told at NBC and the upcoming Uncle Buck at ABC. Packer’s development slate also includes comedy Bonita & Mechelle, with Eva Longoria producing, and drama Buckhead, both at NBC.
Harvey hosts a syndicated daytime talk show, game shows Family Feud and its offshoot Celebrity Family Feud and a nationally syndicated morning radio show. Additionally, Harvey is producing with Ellen DeGeneres the upcoming NBC comedy/variety show Little Big Shots.
Think Like A Man is the latest movie remake in the works this TV development season, joining two other projects from Sony TV: My Best Friend’s Wedding at ABC and In The Line Of Fire at NBC. Additionally, NBC gave a series order to Taken, Fox has a Lethal Weapon and Behind Enemy Lines series in the works, CBS is developing Training Day, and the CW has The Notebook.
