Ratings have been shaky but Fox has faith in new comedies Grandfathered and The Grinder, picking up six additional scripts for each show.

Grandfathered, starring John Stamos, and The Grinder, toplined by Rob Lowe, both launched to largely positively reviews, with Fox logo horizontalThe Grinder drawing some of the strongest critical notices for a new comedy this year. They started off soft with a 1.5 Live+Same Day rating each, with solid, approximately 45%, delayed viewing increases. In their most recent airings this week, Grandfathered logged a 1.0 in L+SD, The Grinder 0.9.

Fox brass’ decision to order more scripts was based on seeing upcoming episodes of both shows that are yet to air, the series’ upscale, diverse audiences, and the general rule that comedies usually take longer to build. The move comes a couple of hours after Grandfather star Stamos today was formally charged with DUI, potentially facing up to six months in jail.

Grandfathered and The Grinder will air new episodes next Tuesday before taking a weeklong break for the World Series. They join new Fox drama Rosewood, which has received an order for three more scripts.
