ABC Family has given a pilot order to drama Famous In Love starring Bella Thorne. The project, based on Rebecca Serle’s romantic novel, comes from I. Marlene King, executive producer/co-showrunner of ABC Family’s flagship drama series Pretty Little Liars.
Miguel Arteta is set to direct the pilot, which he will executive produce alongside King and Dan Farah, exec producer on MTV’s upcoming fantasy series The Shannara Chronicles. Serle co-executive produces the drama from Warner Horizon Television, the studio behind PLL.
Famous In Love, which ABCF put on fast track development in March, was written by King and Serle. It stars Thorne as Paige, an ordinary college student who gets her big break after auditioning for the starring role in a Hollywood blockbuster. She must now navigate her new star-studded life and undeniable chemistry with her two co-leads while uncovering the truth about what happened to a famous missing popstar.
“With Famous In Love, Marlene takes us behind the scenes of young Hollywood to tell a sexy, soapy tale about what it’s like to make a movie – and fall in love – in LA,” said Karey Burke, ABCF’s EVP, Programming and Development.
Famous in Love is produced by Kings’ Long Lake Media, Farah Films and Carmina Productions, Inc. in association Warner Horizon.
Actress-singer-dancer Thorne, who has TV history with Disney having starred on the Disney Channel series Shake It Up, is a fan of Serle’s book, calling it “a must-read for anyone curious about life and love behind the scenes” in a quote featured on the book cover. Serle’s followup novel, Truly Madly Famously, was published today by Little Brown, which also was behind Famous In Love.
For ABC Family, to be renamed Freeform in January, the Famous In Love pilot order comes on the heels of the series commitment for a Nicki Minaj comedy.
