The Ice Cube-Charlie Day brawl has three new combatants. Tracy Morgan — who lit up the Emmy Awards last night — Dennis Haysbert are in negotiations and JoAnna Garcia Swisher is set to join the cast of Fist Fight, New Line‘s comedy about a mild-mannered English teacher (Day) who is put to the test when a colleague (Cube) who thinks he is trying to get him fired end up in an epic fist fight after school. Veteran TV helmer Richie Keen is making his feature debut with the pic.
Details of the Morgan and Haysbert characters remain under wraps, while Garcia Swisher is Maggie, the devoted and loving wife of Andy Campbell (Day) who is at least nine months pregnant and convinced that he’s not going to be fired.
Fist Fight is Morgan’s first announced project since he was critically injured in a traffic accident June 2014 in New Jersey. The SNL and 30 Rock alum was in a coma for eight days after a limo van in which he was riding was struck by a speeding Walmart semi. A settlement was reached in the caseearlier this year. Comic James “Jimmy Mack” McNair, Morgan’s friend and mentor, died in the wreck.
Garcia Swisher was a regular on ABC’s summer drama The Astronaut Wives Club and has starred in TV series including Animal Practice, Better With You, Privileged and Reba. Other recent credits include Once Upon A Time, The Mindy Project and Royal Pains. She is repped by WME and John Carrabino Management.
Repped by Gersh and GS Management, 24 alum Haysbert co-starred on Fox’s Backstrom, and his recent feature credits include Ted 2, Think Like A Man Too and Sin City: A Dame To Kill For. He next appears in the Syfy pilot Incorporated from Matt Damon and Ben Affleck.
Dean Norris and Jillian Bell also star in Fist Fight, which was scripted by Evan Susser & Van Robichaux and David Hornsby. Shawn Levy, Max Greenfield and John Rickard are producing, with Ice Cube, Day, Dan Cohen, Marty Ewing and Billy Rosenberg as exec producers. Richard Brener, Samuel J. Brown and Dave Neustadter are overseeing for the studio. Principal photography is set to start this month in Atlanta.
