We’re still more than a month out from the premiere of CBS’ entry into the superhero game, (not counting 1990’s The Flash), but just to make sure we don’t forget, the network has dropped a new Supergirl trailer, this one heavy on footage of the villains Superman’s cousin Kara will be facing off against in her debut season.

Most of the villains look unfamiliar to me – this makes me embarrassed to admit I even read comics. However, we did get a clear glimpse of Peter Facinelli’s Maxwell Lord, the morally ambiguous businessman (first seen in DC comics in 1987) who, in the comics at least, is a sometime ally/full time pain in the Justice League’s side.

We also get a brief reference via a stray line of dialogue to the fact that, at least starting out, Superman and Supergirl are the only metahuman heroes the public is aware of. That’s an interesting choice, especially as Jimmy Olsen (called “James” here, played by Mehcad Brooks) is a series regular. First because in the comics, various iterations of Supergirl tend to show up in continuity only after other heroes have become public figures, and second because it feels like a deliberate callback to the 1984 Supergirl film directed by Jeannot Szwarc. The movie was a spinoff of the Christopher Reeve Superman series, it featured Jimmy Olsen (played by Marc McClure) as a supporting character, and also took pains to establish that Superman was until Supergirl’s appearance the only superhero on earth.

Please let this mean Faye Dunaway is making a cameo appearance at some point.

Supergirl debuts October 26 on CBS. It stars Melissa Benoist, Mehcad Brooks, Calista Flockhart, Chyler Leigh, David Harewood, and Jeremy Jordan.
