Jason Sudeikis and Alison Brie lured solid crowds to their dark romantic comedy Sleeping With Other People, which opened in a traditional modest rollout in Los Angeles and New York. The IFC Films release topped the weekend’s crop of specialty newcomers although others showed promise. Alchemy’s own romantic comedy — by way of a documentary — Meet The Patels bowed in the same number of locations as SWOP to solid numbers. Also opening strong was RADiUS’ Foreign-Language Oscar contender Goodnight Mommy, averaging over $15K per theater. Pantelion Spanish-language animated feature Un Gallo Con Muchos Huevos (A Rooster With Many Eggs) expanded by a couple hundred theaters in its second frame for additional sizzle, while PBS Distribution’s The Black Panthers: Vanguard Of The Revolution showed muscle with more locations in its second frame. Sony Pictures Classics’ Grandma continued to add theaters in its 4th weekend, passing $2M at the box office.

Leslye Headland’s sophomore directing turn Sleeping With Other People took in $103,125 in 5 New York and Los Angeles cinemas, averaging a cool $20,625, leading the pack of this week’s limited release rollouts and giving it the highest per theater average of any feature in release as of this morning. “The film played to multiple sold out shows and has demonstrated incredibly positive audience reaction and word of mouth, especially with young audiences,” the distributor noted Sunday morning in its box office report.

Headland’s previous film, Bachelorette, debuted in an ultra-VOD window ahead of its theatrical bow in September 2012. The title starring Kirsten Dunst, Lizzy Caplan and Rebel Wilson was an on-demand hit, tallying $8.6M to date (versus its $448K theatrical), though the filmmaker said this week she’s happy to see this film go out theatrically. IFC Films will take Sleeping With Other People to the top 10 markets this coming weekend and the top 100 throughout September.

Alchemy’s real-life romantic comedy co-directed by and “starring” Grandfathered actor Ravi Patel, Meet The Patels, opened in New York, Chicago and L.A. in five theaters. It grossed a solid $75,597, averaging $15,119, the second highest PTA of the weekend. Alchemy SVP of Marketing, Vincent Scordino, said this morning: “The film is off to a strong start with one of the year’s best openings for a documentary, selling out multiple shows in both New York and Los Angeles.” Scordino added that “positive reviews” and the film’s key South Asian audience helped propel the title, although it has demonstrated appeal to broader audiences. Alchemy will take Meet The Patels into the top 20 markets in the next couple weeks.

goodnight_mommyRADiUS debuted its thriller Goodnight Mommy in four locations with a solid start. It grossed $60,286, averaging over $15K and landing as the third-highest PTA of the weekend as of late this morning. “Goodnight Mommy not only transfixed filmgoers on the festival circuit, but a trailer debut that went viral, coupled with the film’s selection as Austria’s official entry for the Academy Awards, lead to this weekend’s box office success,” said RADiUS EVP Liza Burnett Fefferman.

Samuel Goldwyn Films debuted A Brilliant Young Mind in three theaters, grossing $36K, averaging $12K. The Toronto ’14 feature had a sizable festival run this past year and had positive press heading into its release. It heads into the top 30 markets going into October.

Among other openers, Sony Classics took Coming Home into three theaters, grossing over $30K, averaging $10,185, while Resident Artist gave Paul Taylor: Creative Domain an exclusive run, grossing $8,150. Richard Gere’s Toronto ’14 title Time Out Of Mind had a challenge going in, given its subject matter and that appears to be reflected in its Week 1 numbers. The film, in which Gere stars as a homeless man in New York, grossed $15,216 in three theaters, averaging just over $5K. The film will be available via VOD beginning Tuesday and will add additional theatrical markets next weekend.

Film Movement did not report opening weekend numbers for its French title Breathe.

Pantelion/Lionsgate added 221 theaters for animated feature Un Gallo Con Muchos Huevos egging on solid numbers in its second weekend. The film grossed $1.9M, averaging $3,084 from 616 runs, a 45% drop from the previous weekend’s $3.4M gross in 395 theaters.

TheBlackPanthers_OfficialPoster_WebPBS Distribution added locations in Harlem and Boston for its Sundance doc The Black Panthers: Vanguard Of The Revolution, holding strong in its second frame. The title grossed just under $40K, averaging $13,288. The film will open exclusive engagements in Washington, Philadelphia and Baltimore next week before hitting Los Angeles and Chicago on September 25.

RADiUS’ Before We Go added over $200K via its on-demand platforms in its sixth week, totaling an estimated $1.75M. Deadline exclusively reported the title had grossed $1.5M in its ultra-VOD window since becoming available July 21st ahead of its theatrical rollout last weekend, where it has cumed just over $33K.

Oscilloscope’s The Second Mother received good news Thursday when Brazil named it its selection for Best Foreign Language Oscar entry. Stateside, the film grossed $50K in 22 theaters ($56K in 15 theaters last weekend), averaging $2,273. The distributor will add another 20 screens this week including runs in Boston, Chicago, Atlanta and Detroit.

Broad Green Pictures added 207 runs for the fourth weekend of Learning To Drive with solid results. The feature grossed over $758K in 277 theaters, averaging $2,737. Its cume is now just under $1.6M.

The Orchard’s Joe Swanberg-directed Digging For Fire added an estimated $50K on-demand in the past week, bringing its total to about $375K. Theatrically, the title has cumed nearly $116K in four weeks.

Grandma continues to drive audiences into its fourth weekend, adding 78 theaters. The SPC feture grossed $738,617, averaging a still-robust $5,682, bringing the film starring Lily Tomlin across the $2 million threshold.

In its fifth weekend, Music Box Films added 24 runs for its hit Sundance doc Meru, grossing $285,600 in 168 theaters, averaging $1,700. The film has cumed over $1.65M and is within realistic reach of $2M.

And Sundance Selects added 13 runs for Phoenix, which continues to show dazzle as it closes in on its two-month mark in theaters. It grossed nearly $293K in 198 cinemas, averaging $1,479, bringing its cume to over $2.42M.
