EXCLUSIVE: Filmmaker Penny Marshall, who undoubtedly has helped pave the way for other female directors, will receive the top honor at this year’s Hollywood Film Festival: the Social Impact Cinema Icon award. She and Harry Belafonte are honorary chairpersons for the festival, which runs September 23-27. The festival’s theme this year in Female Filmmaking, and it will feature a Female Fridays lineup dedicated to showcasing films produced and/or directed by women, with curated conversations about issues facing women in Hollywood today. Out of the 91 films programmed at the festival this year, 58 are directed and/or produced by women” Penny Marshall is a great role model for female filmmakers,” said festival CEO and executive producer Brad Parks. “As one of the greatest storytellers of all time, she relies less on technology and more on getting stories out of her actors. We are honored to have her.”

Alan Cumming will host the ninth DGA Honors, with Leonardo DiCaprio, Alec Baldwin and Bryce Dallas Howard serving as presenters. Set for October 15 at the DGA Theater in New York City – and not to be confused with the annual DGA Awards gala – the show will honor those who have “made distinguished contributions to American culture through the world of film and television” while helping to boost filming on the East Coast. This year’s honorees are filmmaker Ron Howard, multihyphenate Tyler Perry, NYC Teamsters Local 817 President Thomas J. O’Donnell, Sen. Charles Schumer, D-N.Y., and film editor Thelma Schoonmaker.
