The deals are already starting to pop at TIFF and the red carpet isn’t even out yet. Oscilloscope Laboratories has just acquired U.S. rights to Ma Ma, the pic directed by Sex And Lucia helmer Julio Medem that stars Penelope Cruz. The deal comes ahead of the movie’s world premiere Tuesday in the Special Presentations section at the Toronto Film Festival.
Cruz stars as Magda, a woman whose strength, grace, and unending capacity for love guide her through both tragedies and miracles. A chance encounter following a grim medical diagnosis connects her with soccer star Arturo (Luis Tosar), who is, himself, dealing with unspeakable loss. Together, they raise Magda’s son while grappling with the realities of their situations and ultimately rising above life’s trials to find joy.
Cruz also produced the film with Medem and Alvaro Longoria for Morena Films. CAA, which reps Cruz, brokered the deal.
“Ma Ma is a deeply resonant film that is clearly the work of an auteur with a distinct and important voice,” Oscilloscope’s Dan Berger said of Medem (Sex And Lucia) ” Julio’s vision, and Penélope’s incredible performance, leap from the screen and we couldn’t be more excited to bring them to audiences.”
eOne’s Seville International is handling international sales at Toronto and eOne is releasing the film in Spain and Canada.
