Warner Bros, DC Comics and the CW today unveiled the first image of Falk Hentschel and Ciara Renée in costume as Carter Hall/Hawkman and Kendra Saunders/Hawkgirl as they’ll appear on the midseason Arrow/The Flash spinoff DC’s Legends Of Tomorrow. Here’s a closer look:
Like their DC Comics counterparts, in the series Hawkman and Hawkgirl are the reincarnation of a pair of devoted lovers originally from Ancient Egypt. Fated to be born again and again in different eras, they two always find each other and generally end up fighting for their current era’s version of truth, justice and the [Appropriate nation-state] way. (Worth noting however that the Legends version of Hawkgirl combines two versions of the character.) The characters will debut on this season’s Arrow/The Flash crossover episode before returning as series regulars on Legends.
Of interest to me is the effort, as you can see in the image at the top of the page, made to capture the spirit, if not the letter, of the flamboyant hawk-themed costumes seen in the comics. Weirdo hawk masks: check. Spiked mace: check. It was probably too much to ask for a He-Man-style shirtless Hawkman uniform, but it’s refreshing how fully the CW’s comic book shows embrace comic book aesthetics. Consider me impatient as hell for Legends Of Tomorrow‘s premiere.
Legends Of Tomorrow follows the time-traveling rogue Rip Hunter (Arthur Darvill), who gathers together a mismatched team of heroes and villains from the Arrow/Flash universe to prevent the immortal supervillain Vandal Savage from destroying reality. In addition to Renée and Hentschel, it stars Victor Garber as Firestorm, Brandon Routh as The Atom, Caity Lotz as White Canary, Franz Drameh as Jay Jackson, Dominic Purcell as Heat Wave, and Wentworth Miller as Captain Cold. The series debuts in early 2016.
